New music and festivals/concerts..
It is has been forever since I have posted. I have to admit.. I have been a little lazy in not posting anything. Besides my England trip of June '08 and my soon purchase of a new iPhone (those #%@!# lines at Apple) I thought I'd share my other recent news of my latest music purchases and festivals/ concerts. OK here it goes.

Latest purchase highlights for new releases
:
Coldplay - Viva La Vida - Excellent.. love the new instruments.. produced by Brian Eno!
The Maccabees - Colour it In - Awesome British rock CD.. and very upbeat
The Dandy Warhols - Odditorium - This is OK, but not like their earlier stuff..
Albert Hammond Jr. - Como Te Llama? - the most upbeat member of The Strokes has a good follow-up to his first. Veers off in a different place though.
Islands - Arm's Way - a more polished, less experimental/indie pop sounding version of their previous album. It has a more grown up sound. Still getting used to it.
The Ting Tings - We Started Nothing - Get's me moving and oh so much fun!
Wolf Parade - At Mount Zoomer - Excellent follow-up!! They continue the good music!
The Last Shadow Puppets - The Age of the Understatement - Excellent collaberation of the lead singer from The Arctic Monkeys with Rascal's singer.
Scissors For Lefty - Underhanded Romance - Very funky rock.. Love the sound!
The French Kicks - Swimming - Nice follow-up to their previous...

I have also purchased some older albums of Lou Reed, Blonde Redhead, Roxy Music, The Get Up Kids, Eurhythmics, My Morning Jacket, etc.

Festivals and concerts:
Foals - Pretty good. They were very energetic and tight...
The Cold War Kids / Elvis Perkins
Love the Cold War Kids! They were awesome! Elvis was more laid back but excellent
Siren Festival 2008 - Coney Island, Brooklyn
Wow.. what an awesome festival.. the only thing that was bad about the day was the terrible heat wave (agh!). I felt like I had heat exhuastion today! The bands I saw here were the following:
-Film School - Great cross between Sonic Youth noise/guitar and post punk sound... They were good!
-Annuals - Mixed bag of upbeat almost emo sound (at least live) and quieter ballads. I enjoyed them!
-Ra Ra Riot - They were good live. Strings mixed with post punk sound. I will check them out more online.
-Jaguar Love - Only caught part of this. It was good, but maybe not exactly my style (or maybe the heat was getting to me by this time!)
-Islands - Excellent! Maybe I am partial to them. I have been wanted to see them in concert for a while. They didn't disappoint. Although, not too familiar with their new stuff. It still was all good!

I would have stayed later to see Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks and The Broken Social Scene, but the heat the crowds of people had worn me out.

Any good music you heard or listened to?

I envy the number of available concert options down in New York - been hoping to catch Ra Ra Riot and The Foals for quite some time. I noticed there was an influx of great shows playing Maxwell's too - lucky!

So much music to talk about. Your picks are good. I have checked out a number of them. I just received the 1st Albert Hammond Jr. CD so I haven't had a chance to hear the new one. The first one is good, just as good as The Strokes if not better.

Where do I start with the music I've picked up lately?

For starters, I'm listening to Thrice, The Alchemy Index Volumes III & IV. It's a four volume concept of 4 EPs with Earth, Air, Fire, and Water as the themes. Each EP has a different sound.

I guess I'll just line-list a few bands I've check out and comment on them
1. Sparks "Angst in My Pants" - late 70's new wave, in the same vein as Gang of Four
2. Camphor - sort of like Eels meets Tom Waits
3. Tokyo Police Club - Elephant Shell - pretty good for their 2nd record but it sounds like the first one
4. Fleet Foxes - folky, My Morning Jacket/Band of Horses-ey...very good and authentic
5. Black Kids - mediocre retro new wave produced by Bernard Butler. Some catchy songs make it fun - 6 on a scale of 1-10
6. Bon Iver - my latest and longest kick - great stuff!
7. Bowerbirds - like a 3 piece version of Beirut with violin, accordion, percussion and guitar...songs are dark and catchy at the same time
8. Cut Copy - Depeche Mode meets New Order meets Roxy Music for someone just getting into those bands
9. Ours - sort of like their first couple of albums - very reminiscent of Jeff Buckley but not as good (not that it's a bad thing)
10. Sigur Ros - spectacular!
11. Frightened Rabbit - really good but the vocals are too similar to Adam Duritz of Counting Crows which occasionally makes me cringe!
12. Mogwai - Mr. Beast - classic Mogwai album - it's great and mostly instrumental which I have been getting into lately
12. Shearwater - more than a folk/rock band, vocals are really good and the music is almost melodramatic if you can picture that for a more mellow "cafe" type band
13. Quiet Village - great soundtrack music; sort of like DJ Shadow, but all instrumental, really visual music
14. Impossible Shapes - catchy at times, vocally irritating at others, potential to make a great rocking Pixies-esque record but it just doesn't happen...

Shew! Great picks for music.

Eric

Oh and let's not forget the $0.49 Paul Westerberg download available on Amazon - it's one track but it's a full album of songs clocking in just under 45 minutes total - all for 49 cents!

Yeah.. also coming up next week is the all points west festival! It is basically "Coachella East". Looking forward to a fun filled weekend of music. You brought up a few new and intriguing bands that I haven't heard of yet. I will have to check a few of them out. Others in your list are on my cue to get. Thanks for the tips...
